Ever since Adam and Eve disobeyed God, all people are born with a seed of sin. I have it. You have it. We all have it. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). As a child, I am happy. I am free. The blood of Jesus covers my sins. As I grow older, I don’t feel so free anymore. This seed is producing sinful thoughts and actions in me. I begin to feel uneasy. Sometimes I am confused or afraid. Now What? I’m at the End of My Rope But What Is This?
One day Jesus was traveling with his friends. He came to a village in Samaria. Jesus sat down by a well to rest while his friends went to buy food. As Jesus was sitting there, a woman came to get water from the well. Jesus asked her, “Can you give me a drink of water?” The woman was surprised. “You asked me for a drink? Don’t you know that I am a Samaritan and your people, the Jews, don’t have anything to do with us?” “Go, tell your husband and come back here,” Jesus said.
Do you know that the Bible teaches that all men are born in sin and are naturally inclined to do evil? Thus all men are in a lost state and condition. “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6). “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness” (Mark 7:21-22). Psalm 51:5.
This first man was Adam and his wife’s name was Eve. God provided a home for them in a beautiful garden. God loved Adam and Eve and they loved God. God instructed Adam to take care of the garden. God told them that they could eat anything they wanted, except from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and that they would die if they disobeyed. Good news—Jesus is alive! He arose from the grave! He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Jesus wants to lead us home to His heavenly Father.
